Prefix Private Registration Plates

Prefix number plates are a popular and eye-catching style of vehicle registration. They were issued between 1983 and 2001, and the prefix indicates the year of registration. The first letter on the plate signifies the year in which the vehicle was registered, followed by a unique combination of numbers and letters. Prefix plates have become highly sought after due to their distinct design and age-related significance. Additionally, they offer personalisation options for drivers looking to add a unique touch to their vehicles.

Current Style Car Registrations

The existing style of number plates is made up of seven characters. It starts with two letters, followed by a two-digit number and ends with three more letters. These registration plates can still be used to spell out words, for example: DE51 RED. This type of new number plate allows for a much larger number of combinations compared to the previous versions that were available before 2001. However, the letters "I" and "Q" are not allowed, but the letter "Z" can appear as part of the last three characters.

Number's Up for Mayor's Car

Cherished car number plate supplier New Reg has shown its support for South Ribble Borough Council by providing the ultimate accessory for the mayoral car.

The South Ribble mayoral car will now carry the plate ‘S11 RBC’ after Preston-based New Reg agreed to loan the exclusive number plate for civic occasions.

The former Mayor of South Ribble, Councillor Matthew Tomlinson, was the first to sample the new number plate in his last week of civic duty. He said,

“Thank you to New Reg for their kind gesture. The S11 RBC plate is immediately identifiable. And promoting awareness of the borough has been an important part of the Mayor’s role - so the number plate will help us greatly.”

New Reg has revealed that South Ribble Borough Council is not alone - car number plates featuring organisation names and professions are increasingly common.

The New Reg database includes 40 million number plates from as little as £69 and currently includes ‘C4 SHH’ perfect for financiers or accountants, ‘TEE 7H’ and ‘DOC 7OR’ for the medical professions; and, even ‘W4 GER’ for a bookmaker.

New Reg Marketing manager said,

“We are pleased we could help and the number plate looks great on the Mayor’s car. With almost 40 million number plates currently available at New Reg it was fairly straight forward to find the unique series of letters or numbers for the Mayor’s number plate.

“The registration process was quick and straight forward – as with all our customers New Reg took care of everything.”
