Current Style Plates 2001 - present
Current style number plates and private plates consist of two letters, a two-figure age identifier and finally three letters. Good examples of quality current-style personalise registrations are DE51 RES, PR05 PER and HU55 LED plus many more of course! The current registration mark format was first introduced by the DVLA in 2001.

Prefix Plates 1983 - 2001
Prefix personalised plates and private plates contain the year identifier at the beginning of the personalised registration. A quality selection of cherished prefix registrations includes R4 NDY, S73 VEN and R4 CHS - great registrations, we think you'll agree! Prefix registrations were first introduced by the DVLA in 1983.

Suffix Plates 1963 - 1983
Suffix DVLA Number plates contain the year identifier at the end of the vehicle registration. These private plates were issued by the DVLA to vehicles manufactured between 1963 and 1982. Good examples of these types of vehicle registrations are EXC 173D, BLO 550M and JEN 11E.

Dateless Cherished Plates 1903 - 1962
Dateless car registrations or Cherished Number Plates do not contain a year identifier and can consist of a number combination followed by a letter combination and vice versa. Some of these registrations such as JON 321 and Y 1 are seen as the creme de la creme within the number plate industry.

Northern Ireland Number Plates
Irish Number plates
contain no year identifier and always incorporate an I, Z and up to 4 numbers. Irish number plates were first issued in 1903 under the original british system of identifiers. Great examples of Irish number plates are BJZ 66 and IT 1.

In the UK, the task of managing car registrations and number plates, including personalised ones, falls under the jurisdiction of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, commonly referred to as the DVLA.
