The biggest one being the invention of the internet which meant we could invite our customers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newreg.co.uk\/\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newreg.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">private plates purchase online<\/a>! There have been the new registration number formats, whole process changes and of course with that follows changes to paperwork, including the process of buying and selling DVLA number plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-aff27f5d-2b37-40bd-8459-c7f6f400f9bb\">Here I look at the three documents one of which you will have if you have your own personalised number plate and that you may need if you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newreg.co.uk\/valuations\/newreg_valuations_form\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">private number plates to sell<\/a> or wish buy a private number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-92bc678e-2732-437d-b2da-ba47cd74ad95\">Types of Vehicle Documents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-0f0a30c4-a7df-452a-89a6-0f01ee5d3fba\">When buying or selling a private number plate, understanding the various vehicle documents involved is crucial. Here are some of the most common documents you\u2019ll encounter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-24f745bc-199b-41c0-a986-a50501251e8d\">\n<li><strong>V5C<\/strong>: Often referred to as the logbook, the V5C is the vehicle registration document. It contains essential information about the vehicle, such as its make, model, and registration number. This document is vital for proving the vehicle\u2019s registered keeper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>V750<\/strong>: This certificate of entitlement is issued by the DVLA when you purchase a private number plate. It confirms your right to the registration mark and is necessary to complete the transfer process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>V778<\/strong>: Known as the retention document, the V778 is issued by the DVLA when you decide to retain a private number plate. It confirms your right to the registration number and allows you to transfer it to another vehicle in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-7e68b913-c0d8-4d0d-8dc2-5f38a13a12e0\">V5C UK Registration Certificate (DVLA Registered Vehicles)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-a463b435-265d-458e-9119-e1363f88529b\">The V5C contains the name and address of the registered keeper and vehicle details (commonly called the Log Book). It shows the keeper NOT the legal owner, if you need to prove ownership of the vehicle you need a receipt or invoice from when you purchased it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-23074fe8-3872-4b95-ac5f-090151f9aaf2\">Going back to changes, well there have been many over the years. Older car or motorbike owners may never have applied for a modern V5C if the vehicle is sat in a shed as a restoration project!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-f67b8de9-526a-483f-bf89-d359818a8ff9\">In 2006 DVLA had to phase out the blue version introduced in 2004 and replace it with a new version after a batch of blank documents had been stolen. They were similar in style just mainly red rather than blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"block-c80509fe-cb12-4a01-a07c-b6d0a6b025cc\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newreg.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/V5C-old-Vehicle-and-Private-Plates-Documents.jpg\" alt=\"Old version of a V5C Vehicle Registration Document (V5C)\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-cf05e502-161b-4e3c-91a1-6eb09e9ff167\">This version has since been replaced by the current style V5C which DVLA introduced in April 2019. Although previous versions are still valid, any changes that trigger a new V5C will result in a new style V5C being sent. If therefore you submit an address change or change your private number plates then expect DVLA to send you the new version as a replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"block-569f5d27-e194-47d0-a830-10f543b30cb7\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newreg.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/V5C-Vehicle-and-Private-Plates-Documents.jpg\" alt=\"New (current) version of a V5C Registration Document (V5C)\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-5094e1df-76e0-497f-9d95-f1e60675444a\">Registered keepers are asked to ensure that their personal registration details are correct and that the easily identifiable characteristics such as Make, Model, Colour, VIN\/Chassis and Engine Numbers on their V5C are correct. If there are any inaccuracies, the V5C must be returned to the DVLA for an amendment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-d0b8d36e-5aeb-466a-b20f-c0734d7affcc\">Private Number Plates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-2d50f43e-ec2f-4898-841a-26bd2e50d944\">If you purchase a private plate you will need to submit your V5C to DVLA as part of the application to transfer the number to your vehicle. Your personalised number plate can be held on a certificate and there are two versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-7936db10-b999-49d8-b6bf-895dd8106554\">Private registration plates issued by DVLA Personalised Registrations are effectively brand new private number plates that have never been assigned to a vehicle before and are issued on a V750 Certificate of Entitlement. A private registration mark that has been taken off a vehicle will be issued on a V778 Retention Document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-dde16aec-9d93-45e7-a5a6-f2b594f4414b\">V750 Certificate of Entitlement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-3b50bd03-a5cb-48b4-a1ca-9f0b5bb10c2d\">The V750 hasn&#8217;t changed much since I started trading in private number plates. Initially they were only valid for a year and would need renewing a year at a time. Later the option to renew for one, two or three years was introduced and eventually the entitlement period was increased to 10 years, regardless the appearance remained much the same; a mostly pink document. However in January this year (2024) the DVLA introduced a new version that is barely recognisable, as you can see, no pink at all! The biggest change is that for security the certificate reference number is now on the rear of the document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"block-b0275840-7d0a-451a-ac04-0e2fdf7eef4f\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newreg.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/V750-old-Vehicle-and-Private-Plates-Documents.jpg\" alt=\"V750 Certificate of Entitlement (old version)\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"block-69c9235c-ce56-40e2-aea3-32c99be98b62\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newreg.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/V750-Vehicle-and-Private-Plates-Documents.jpg\" alt=\"V750 Certificate of Entitlement - new version (from 2024)\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-d516c475-612b-4b15-a9d5-a630c08513be\">V778 Retention Document<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-a6b87f2f-a346-461a-a509-6a5fef9ba4ad\">Much like the V750, the V778 hadn&#8217;t changed much until January 2024. The new V778 is virtually identical to the new V750. Originally a V778 was issued for a period of one year when an owner took the number off their vehicle (retained it).
