Age Identifiers

Private plates in the UK have gone through several formats to accommodate the growing number of vehicles on the road. The earliest format was dateless plates, which did not feature an age identifier. Later on, the DVLA introduced suffix, then prefix and now current style plates consisting of two letters, a two-figure age identifier and finally three letters. It is important to check the age of the receiving vehicle as registration marks carry an 'age identifier'. The DVLA does not permit newer registration marks to be transferred to older vehicles, so it is essential to choose a plate that suits the vehicle's age.
