How to Sell Your Number Plate

Selling a private number plate is simpler than many people think. Whether your plate is currently on your car, held on a DVLA retention certificate, or inherited from a relative, the process is straightforward when you work with an experienced dealer.

At New Reg, we begin with a free valuation. Once we have assessed your plate and agreed a listing price, we market it to the thousands of buyers who visit our site every day searching for their ideal registration. We have been doing this since 1991 — long before most dealers existed online.

When a buyer is found and the sale is agreed, we manage the entire DVLA transfer process on your behalf. You do not need to deal with any paperwork directly. Once the transfer is complete, you receive your payment.

We operate on a commission basis, meaning there are no upfront costs to list your plate with us. Our commission terms are set out clearly before you agree to anything, so there are no surprises.

New Reg is a member of the Cherished Numbers Dealers Association (CNDA), which means we operate under a strict code of practice to protect both buyers and sellers.

What Makes a Number Plate Valuable?

Not all private registrations are created equal. The value of a plate is determined by demand — and demand is driven by how meaningful, memorable, or exclusive a combination is.

Dateless plates — those with no year identifier, such as 1 AA or JON 1 — are typically the most valuable as they can be transferred to any vehicle regardless of age, and supply is permanently fixed. Short combinations and those with a single digit or single letter command the highest prices.

Prefix and suffix plates with popular three-letter combinations — particularly initials, first names, words, and abbreviations — also attract strong buyer interest. The letters at the start of a prefix plate (e.g. JON 1A) or a suffix plate (e.g. ABC 123A) make these ideal for personalisation.

Current-style plates (e.g. AB12 ABC) can have value if the combination spells something meaningful, but are generally less sought after than older formats.

If you are unsure whether your plate has commercial value, the best approach is to submit it for a free valuation and we will give you an honest assessment.

Selling Your Number Plate — Common Questions

  • How do I sell my number plate?
Submit a free valuation request with New Reg. We assess your plate and, if suitable, list it for sale on our website. Once a buyer is found, we handle the DVLA transfer paperwork and pay you directly.
  • How much is my number plate worth?
Value depends on desirability — short combinations, initials, names, words, and low-number dateless plates tend to be worth more. Submit your plate for a free valuation and we'll give you an honest market assessment.
  • How long does it take to sell a number plate?
Timescales vary. Highly desirable combinations can sell quickly, while more specialist plates may take longer to find the right buyer. We market your plate to thousands of buyers searching our site every day.
  • Do I need to remove the plate from my car first?
No. You can sell a plate while it is still assigned to your vehicle. Before the sale completes, you will transfer it to a new car or put it on DVLA retention. We guide you through whichever route suits you.
  • What does New Reg charge to sell my plate?
We operate on a commission basis — no upfront fees. We only earn when your plate sells. Our commission terms are set out clearly before you agree to list.
  • Can I sell a plate that is on DVLA retention?
Yes. A plate held on a retention certificate (V778) can be sold and transferred directly to a buyer. New Reg handles the DVLA transfer process on your behalf once a sale is agreed.
  • What types of plate can I sell?
We accept dateless, prefix, suffix, and current-style registrations for valuation. We also consider Irish plates. The most saleable are those with short combinations, meaningful initials or words, or low numbers — but we are happy to assess any private registration.
  • Is it safe to sell through a dealer?
Selling through an established CNDA-registered dealer like New Reg is the safest route. We have been trading since 1991 and are members of the Cherished Numbers Dealers Association. All transactions are handled securely and the DVLA transfer is completed correctly.
