NI private plates — dateless, legal on any UK vehicle, from £69. Established 1991 — the UK's first online plate dealer.
Northern Ireland personalised number plates — also known as NI private plates or Irish registrations — are DVLA-registered vehicle registrations issued in Northern Ireland. Every NI plate contains the letter I or Z within its letter sequence, making them instantly recognisable. Crucially, they carry no year identifier, meaning they are genuinely dateless and can be assigned to any UK vehicle regardless of its age.
New Reg has been a DVLA-recognised reseller since 1991 and sells NI registrations to customers across the whole of the UK. The transfer process is handled exactly the same as any other UK plate — there is no special process for Northern Irish registrations.
Northern Irish registrations are one of the most popular choices for private plate buyers in the UK for three reasons:
Unlike current-style GB plates (which carry a two-digit year identifier) or prefix/suffix plates (which carry an age letter), NI plates reveal nothing about when the vehicle was registered. This means they can go on a brand-new car or a classic from the 1960s equally well. It also means the plate will never look out of place as your vehicle ages — or when you change your car entirely.
Northern Irish registrations are generally more affordable than equivalent English dateless plates. Four-digit combinations start from £69. If you want the benefits of a dateless registration — age concealment, universal vehicle eligibility, long-term value retention — NI plates offer the most cost-effective route.
Every NI plate contains an I or Z — letters that do not appear in standard GB plate formats. This opens up name and word combinations that are simply unavailable on any other type of UK registration. Names like IAN, IVY, IVAN, ISLA, IZZY, ZAC, ZOE, ZARA, and ZANE can all be represented on NI plates but not on standard GB formats.
NI plates follow a consistent structure: two or three letters, followed by one to four numbers. The letter sequences always contain an I or Z — for example:
The letter combinations historically relate to Northern Irish county registration offices. Belfast used the widest range — AZ through ZZ — while other counties had specific two or three-letter codes. The system has remained in place since the original DVLA registration handover and all these plates remain fully valid today.
Number length affects price significantly. Single-digit plates (e.g. GAZ 1) are the most desirable and expensive. Two-digit (GAZ 12) and three-digit (GAZ 123) are mid-range. Four-digit combinations (GAZ 1234) are the most common and most affordable.

Once the transfer is confirmed, road-legal acrylic plates can be dispatched to your door within 24 hours of identity verification.
Both English dateless plates and NI registrations are dateless — neither reveals the vehicle's age. The differences are:
If budget is a consideration, or if your name contains an I or Z, NI plates are almost always the best choice. See our full guide to Irish number plates for more detail on formats and history.
