Prefix Private Registration Plates

Prefix number plates are a popular and eye-catching style of vehicle registration. They were issued between 1983 and 2001, and the prefix indicates the year of registration. The first letter on the plate signifies the year in which the vehicle was registered, followed by a unique combination of numbers and letters. Prefix plates have become highly sought after due to their distinct design and age-related significance. Additionally, they offer personalisation options for drivers looking to add a unique touch to their vehicles.

Suffix Private Plates

Suffix style registration plates were introduced in 1963 and were in use till 1983. The registration plates comprise three letters, one to three numbers, and a final letter indicating the year of registration, starting with "A" for 1963, "B" for 1964, and so on. If you are interested in purchasing a suffix private plate, you can utilise our easy-to-use suffix plate builder that provides instant results at an unbeatable price. With our platform, you can customise your plate by selecting your preferred letters and numbers to create a unique registration that reflects your personality. Our suffix plates are high-quality and legal for use on UK roads, so you can be sure of getting a great value for your money.

Current Style Car Registrations

The existing style of number plates is made up of seven characters. It starts with two letters, followed by a two-digit number and ends with three more letters. These registration plates can still be used to spell out words, for example: DE51 RED. This type of new number plate allows for a much larger number of combinations compared to the previous versions that were available before 2001. However, the letters "I" and "Q" are not allowed, but the letter "Z" can appear as part of the last three characters.

Irish Number Plates

Personalised Number Plates Northern Ireland

NI private plates — dateless, legal on any UK vehicle, from £69. Established 1991 — the UK's first online plate dealer.

What Are Northern Ireland Personalised Number Plates?

Northern Ireland personalised number plates — also known as NI private plates or Irish registrations — are DVLA-registered vehicle registrations issued in Northern Ireland. Every NI plate contains the letter I or Z within its letter sequence, making them instantly recognisable. Crucially, they carry no year identifier, meaning they are genuinely dateless and can be assigned to any UK vehicle regardless of its age.

New Reg has been a DVLA-recognised reseller since 1991 and sells NI registrations to customers across the whole of the UK. The transfer process is handled exactly the same as any other UK plate — there is no special process for Northern Irish registrations.

Why Choose a Northern Ireland Private Plate?

Northern Irish registrations are one of the most popular choices for private plate buyers in the UK for three reasons:

Genuinely Dateless

Unlike current-style GB plates (which carry a two-digit year identifier) or prefix/suffix plates (which carry an age letter), NI plates reveal nothing about when the vehicle was registered. This means they can go on a brand-new car or a classic from the 1960s equally well. It also means the plate will never look out of place as your vehicle ages — or when you change your car entirely.

Excellent Value for Money

Northern Irish registrations are generally more affordable than equivalent English dateless plates. Four-digit combinations start from £69. If you want the benefits of a dateless registration — age concealment, universal vehicle eligibility, long-term value retention — NI plates offer the most cost-effective route.

Unique Letter Combinations

Every NI plate contains an I or Z — letters that do not appear in standard GB plate formats. This opens up name and word combinations that are simply unavailable on any other type of UK registration. Names like IAN, IVY, IVAN, ISLA, IZZY, ZAC, ZOE, ZARA, and ZANE can all be represented on NI plates but not on standard GB formats.

Northern Ireland Plate Formats Explained

NI plates follow a consistent structure: two or three letters, followed by one to four numbers. The letter sequences always contain an I or Z — for example:

  • Two-letter format: AZ 1234, BZ 99, IZ 1
  • Three-letter format: GAZ 1234, BEZ 99, JAZ 1

The letter combinations historically relate to Northern Irish county registration offices. Belfast used the widest range — AZ through ZZ — while other counties had specific two or three-letter codes. The system has remained in place since the original DVLA registration handover and all these plates remain fully valid today.

Number length affects price significantly. Single-digit plates (e.g. GAZ 1) are the most desirable and expensive. Two-digit (GAZ 12) and three-digit (GAZ 123) are mid-range. Four-digit combinations (GAZ 1234) are the most common and most affordable.

NI Plates vs Other Dateless Registrations

Both English dateless plates and NI registrations are dateless — neither reveals the vehicle's age. The differences are:

  • Price: NI plates are typically more affordable than English dateless plates of equivalent desirability.
  • Format: English dateless plates pre-date 1963 and use various letter/number layouts without I or Z. NI plates always contain I or Z.
  • Availability: NI plates offer combinations containing I and Z that are simply not available anywhere else.

If budget is a consideration, or if your name contains an I or Z, NI plates are almost always the best choice. See our full guide to Irish number plates for more detail on formats and history.

Northern Ireland Personalised Plates — Common Questions

  • Can I buy an NI personalised plate if I live in England or Scotland?
Yes. Northern Irish registrations are fully legal on any UK-registered vehicle, wherever you live. New Reg transfers NI plates to customers across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The DVLA process is identical to any other UK registration.
  • Why are Northern Ireland plates dateless?
NI plates use a letters-and-numbers format with no year element. Unlike current-style GB plates, they give no indication of when the vehicle was registered. This means they can be legally assigned to a vehicle of any age — making them genuinely dateless.
  • What format do Northern Ireland personalised plates use?
NI plates consist of two or three letters followed by one to four numbers — for example AZ 1234, GAZ 99, or BEZ 1. Every NI plate contains either the letter I or Z within its letter sequence.
  • What names work well on Northern Ireland plates?
Names with I or Z are ideal — IAN, IVY, ISLA, IVAN, IZZY, ZAC, ZOE, ZARA, ZANE. These letters appear in every NI registration and are unavailable on standard GB plates, making NI registrations uniquely suited to a wide range of names.
  • How much do NI personalised plates cost?
From £69 at New Reg. Four-digit combinations are the most affordable. Shorter sequences (1–9, 1–99) and plates spelling names cost more. All prices include the DVLA transfer service.
  • Are NI personalised plates a good investment?
Short NI plates — single and double-digit combinations and those spelling recognisable names — have historically held and increased in value. Their dateless nature sustains long-term demand. Desirability of the specific combination is the key factor in value.
  • How do I transfer an NI plate onto my car?
Your vehicle needs a valid V5C, current MOT, and road tax or SORN. New Reg provides the V750 Certificate of Entitlement and guides you through the DVLA online transfer (available 7am–7pm). We also offer a managed transfer service. See our full transfer guide for step-by-step instructions.
  • What is the difference between NI plates and English dateless plates?
Both are dateless. NI plates always contain I or Z and are generally more affordable than equivalent English dateless combinations. English dateless plates pre-date 1963 and use different letter/number layouts. For budget-conscious buyers, or those whose names contain I or Z, NI plates are almost always the better choice.
