The validation character is a unique letter in the document reference number on your V5C logbook. It confirms the document is genuine and is required by DVLA to complete a number plate transfer online.
-
It appears within the document reference number, located near the top-right section of your V5C. The reference is an 11-character code: the final digit is the validation character.
-
DVLA requires the validation character as part of the online retention or assignment process. Without it, you cannot complete the digital transfer form and will need to apply by post instead.
-
If the character is obscured or the document is damaged, you will need to apply by post using the full V5C logbook, or contact DVLA to request a replacement document before proceeding.
-
Yes. Every V5C has a unique document reference number and validation character tied to that specific document. Never share it publicly, as it links your personal details to the vehicle record.
