Frequently asked questions

  • What is the validation character on a V778 certificate?
The validation character is a unique character within the reference number of your V778 assignment certificate. DVLA uses it to verify the document is genuine during online number plate transfers.
  • Where is the validation character on a V778?
It appears within the certificate reference number in the top section of the V778 document. This page highlights its exact position on an annotated image.
  • What is a V778 retention certificate used for?
A V778 is issued when a personalised number plate is removed from a vehicle and retained by the keeper. It allows you to hold the plate temporarily and re-assign it to another eligible vehicle later.
  • Do I need the V778 validation character to assign a plate online?
Yes. DVLA's online assignment service requires the validation character from your V778 as part of the security verification process before the transfer can proceed.
  • What should I do if I have lost my V778 certificate?
Contact DVLA immediately. They can issue a replacement V778, though this process may take several weeks. Without a valid V778, you cannot assign the retained registration mark to a new vehicle.
